Fish Canada/Workboat Canada to Present Cooke Aquaculture with Industry Appreciation Award

Moncton, New Brunswick – Management and Staff of the Fish Canada/Workboat Canada Trade Show which is taking place February 3-4, 2012 at the Moncton Coliseum are pleased to be presenting Cooke Aquaculture an Industry Achievement award. This award is a small token to show appreciation for the selfless and far reaching response that the company took during the devastating flooding in Charlotte County in December of 2010 and continues even today.

The December 13 and 14th flooding resulted in hundreds of claims to the Canadian Red Cross province wide and the Emergency Measures Organization estimated damage to homes at 50 million dollars; 256 of these claimants were in Charlotte County and 21 suffered catastrophic damage.

Corporate response to this disaster was “unprecedented” and became a starting point for all other volunteer activity. Cooke Aquaculture did not leave this disaster unscathed; damage to their hatcheries was in excess of more than 3 million, but thankfully, they saved all of their fish.

In excess of 60 employees of Cooke Aquaculture were active in the relief effort. CEO of Cooke Aquaculture, Glenn Cooke, has praised his employees and was proud of their efforts to utilize boats to rescue countless individuals and to deliver food and supplies. During a community gathering, Cooke once again said there was never a hesitation to get involved. “This was our responsibility. It’s neighbors and friends helping our people when they needed it. This flood happened in our town and to our people. There was no question of us getting involved,” Glenn Cooke, CEO of Cooke Aquaculture at a community gathering.

Their involvement continued long after the waters receded. In conjunction with J.D. Irving Limited, Cooke Aquaculture spearheaded efforts to get those hit hardest by the flooding, those who had lost everything, into new homes in a new subdivision.

“Charlotte County is home to many in the fishing and aquaculture industry that this event caters to,” explains Show Manager Shawn Murphy. “To recognize Cooke Aquaculture and all of their employees for their courageous efforts during those dark days for so many, was a simple decision and we are proud to do this,” said Murphy.

Mike Cooke, of Cooke Aquaculture, will be presented with this award at the Fish Canada/Workboat Canada Show at 6:00 pm at the Moncton Coliseum. Industry stakeholders will be in attendance as well as the CAO of St. George, Ross Norman who will present Mr. Cooke with this award.

Members of the media are welcome to attend this presentation.
